RSS feeds

This blog provides a way to track posts, very similar to the way you monitor email.  A brief explanation  about how to use RSS feeds is provided at www4.ncsu.edu/~scroggs/mywebsite/RSSfeeds.pdf.

PFL seminars

I met with a representative of the Graduate School today.  She mentioned that students on the waitlist for the PFL seminars almost always get into the seminar.  If you are on the waitlist, you should go to the seminar with the expectation (not the promise) that you'll be able to stay.  If registration is required, you must be on the waitlist or registered for the seminar to attend.

Career-oriented seminars are the most relevant to MFM,  especially the PDS series and the GLDS series.

ERM courses

Financial Mathematics students can sometimes take courses in Enterprise Risk Management (course link). For example, in Fall 2010, Enterprise Risk Management, MBA 590 section 4 (Dr. Bartley), is offered. Talk with your adviser to obtain prior approval for any elective not on the pre-approved list.

Graduate Training Seminars

Graduate Training Seminars

These seminars are very relevant to developing your 'soft skills', especially the 'PDS' series.

I am writing to announce the spring lineup of Preparing Future Leaders workshops and seminars. These events include our new Fundamentals in Teaching (FIT) workshop series in addition to our Professional Development Seminars (PDS) and Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) seminars. We have sent the message below to all graduate students. I invite you to visit our website, http://www.ncsu.edu/grad/preparing-future-leaders/allseminars.html, to see the excellent events we have planned for this spring.

Graduate Leadership Development Series (GLDS)

from previous blog: Wednesday Feb 24, 2010

Graduate Leadership Development Series (GLDS)

The Graduate Leadership Development Series (GLDS) will develop participants' self-awareness, professional adaptability, and leadership skills, preparing graduate students to become effective employees after graduation—employees who hit the ground running and demonstrate their readiness for increasing responsibility and promotion. GLDS is designed to provide graduate students with the type of professional development experience usually reserved for new managers and executives. It can form one of the first steps in a lifelong commitment to professional and personal development.

The Graduate Leadership Development Series (GLDS) is a pilot program of the Graduate School’s Preparing Future Leaders initiative for spring 2010. Funded by a grant from the Procter & Gamble Fund of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation, the series will include up to 30 graduate student participants selected by application. Applicants must agree to attend all four series workshop sessions on April 5, 12, 19, and 26 from 1-5 p.m.

Only 30 graduate students will be accepted for spring 2010. For information and application instructions, visit http://www.ncsu.edu/grad/preparing-future-leaders/career-skills/glds.html. Applications are due Thursday, 11 March by 3 p.m. Questions? Contact Dr. Melissa Bostrom at melissa_bostrom@ncsu.edu.
